so we went to the house of sampoerna a few days ago. sampoerna is the largest tobacco company in indonesia and the factory/museum is a historical site in surabaya. it is still functioning as a cigarette producing factory … we saw women hand rolling cigarettes so fast that it literally looked like watching something in fast forward mode. they can apparently roll around 325 cigarettes per hour.
“Situated in ‘old Surabaya’‚ this stately Dutch colonial-style
compound was built in 1862 and is now a preserved historical site. Previously used as an orphanage managed by the Dutch‚
it was purchased in 1932 by Liem Seeng Tee‚ the founder of
Sampoerna‚ with the intent of it being used as Sampoerna’s
first major cigarette production facility.” (from their homepage)
ok enough about that … it was a pretty underwhelming experience actually … the most interesting part was watching those ladies roll cloves so quickly. mostly, i just wanted you to know that we did leave the resort to see bits of surabaya.
the past 2 days were spent in mount bromo. we left yesterday morning, but unfortunately it was pouring down rain when we got there. we walked around town a little bit and checked out the foggy view of bromo. ended up going to bed around 730pm since we had to get up at 3am this morning for the sunrise tour. the weather was perfect today, the sky was clear. we met 2 other people at the hostel shortly after checking in last night and ended up sharing the jeep with them today for the tour. saw so many stars before the sun came up this morning. saw the constellation scorpio and 2 or 3 shooting stars. also, the moon was so full and bright on the ride up the mountain … really amazing. i doubt that christy and i will see many sunrises on this trip, but this one was well worth it! so beautiful to watch the sun come up and light up the volcanoes. after sunrise, we drove over to bromo and got to walk up to the rim. so crazy! i actually saw lava at the bottom of the volcano and the view from the top was insane! pretty epic experience.
